9 - 18 Months: Playing With Toys
It’s time for building blocks and toys to encourage
creative play
Your baby’s movements are becoming more precise and her play more vigorous. She’ll enjoy toys that move with her and provide different sounds, as well as those with interesting textures and lots of buttons to press. Toys she can twist, push and pull will help improve her manual dexterity as they encourage her to use her hands in different ways. Shape sorters are good for helping her to recognise shapes and colours, and she’ll also enjoy dumper trucks, building blocks and musical instruments she can bang and shake.
From 12 months, she’ll have fun with toys that put her in control, extend her concentration span and encourage creative play, such as themed play sets and activity centres. Lift-the-flap books and those with touchy-feely sections will foster language and literacy skills, as well as encourage her to explore.
